Men’s Ministry 2-13-10 Psalm 13 (Ladies Invited)

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Come and join us this Saturday, February 19 at 8:30 a.m.

Study Psalm 13. This week the women are invited!

  1. David very well could have written this psalm during his Judean wilderness period, when Saul’s army lurked around every corner.  You may want to check out 1 Samuel 19 – 27.  1 Samuel 23:13 & 14 sums up David’s encounters with Saul.  See also 1 Samuel 27:1 for David’s mindset during at least part of this time.
  2. If you were to divide Psalm 13 into sections, how would you separate one section from another?  What are the sentiments David expresses in each successive group of verses?
  3. How many “How long…” questions do you see in verses 1 and 2?  What attidude and action did he attribute to God?  Do you feel he really believed this, or just felt it?  How would such a feeling lead to him taking counsel in his own soul?
  4. List David’s specific prayers in verses 3 and 4.  What are the “lest I…” or lest my…” references do you see?  How would these result from God not answering David’s prayer in verse 3a?
  5. Now compare (or contrast) verses 1 & 2’s “How long…” questions with David’s specific prayers in verses 3 & 4.  For example, do you see any correlation between God “forget(ting)” in him in verse 1 with David’s verse 3 prayer that God “consider” him?
  6. What is the significance of verse 5’s “But I have…”?  List each of the actions David took, is taking, or will take in verses 5 & 6.  What attributes or actions taken by God prompted these heart responses?  How do they do so?
  7. For contract, what’s made the difference between David “taking counsel in (his) own soul” in verse 2 and his trust expressed in verse 5?  Likewise, how did he move from verse 2’s sorrow to verse 5’s rejoicing and singing?

Let’s discuss these questions on Saturday, and whatever else the Lord shows you in this Psalm!

Come to Ruby’s in Laguna Beach, have breakfast (free), and fellowship with the brothers (and sisters).

Men’s Ministry: 1/9/10 Psalm 17 Women Invited

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Come and join us this Saturday.

Saturday, January 9 at 8:30 a.m.

Study Psalm 17. This week the women are invited!

Come to Ruby’s in Laguna Beach, have breakfast (free), and fellowship with the brothers (and sisters).

Ladies and Gentlemen!  This Saturday at 8:30 AM we start anew the fellowship at Ruby’s.  As always, breakfast is free!

Check out Psalm 17.  David is still under much attack, surrounded (verses 9 & 10) by enemies.  He could have written this psalm during his wilderness experience.

It will help to list out David’s specific requests.  Make lists also of both his and his enemies’ attributes, attitudes and priorities, and actions.  Then compare and contrast those lists in light of the two “paths” discussed in verses 4 and 5.  Why is verse 4’s path that of the destroyer?  Why does David request help not to slip from verse 5’s path?

What word pictures does David use besides paths?  Look at the verbs as well as the nouns and adjectives.  What do these images say about David, his enemies, and God?

What is David’s basis for asserting in verse 3 that God found nothing amiss when He tested David?  How does David know in verse 2 that he can be vindicated?  Apart from God’s forgiveness, could you make such statements?

Verses 14 and 15 offer a contrast between David and his enemies, particularly their values and perspectives.  What do the wicked prioritize?  What is David’s confidence and goal?

How else does the Lord speak to you in this psalm?  Bring those insights with you this Saturday.

God bless!

Eric

Men’s Breakfast. This Saturday. Women are invited.

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Come and join us this Saturday.

Saturday, October 3 at 8:30 a.m.

Study Psalm 139:1-24.  This time the women are invited.

Hi all.  We’ll start reviewing this psalm Saturday morning.  The ladies are welcome to join and contribute to the conversation!

Here are some questions on which you can get started:

  • What subjects does David cover, in which verses?  Outline the psalm, because the outline governs all other queries.
  • Why did David write about these subjects, and why did he combine them in this psalm and in this order?
  • How many ways does David cover each subject?  For example, what are all the words he uses for God “knowing” him?  Feel free to look up the words if you’ve the time and resources.
  • Likewise, where are all the places David could go and still not get away from God?
  • How does the psalm change in verse 19?  Why does David do this?  What role does this section play in the psalm?
  • What are the contrasts between verses 19-22 and 23-24?  Are there any shared words or similarities?
  • How is verse 1 similar to verse 23?  How do the verses differ, and what do the variations signify?
  • What else pops out at you?

We may be in this psalm for a while.  Let’s enjoy it together!

Valentine Weekend at Seaside

Monday, February 16th, 2009

This weekend at Calvary Seaside started with the Men’s Study inviting the women to join them at their bimonthly breakfast at Ruby’s.  Through the rain and cold, we all bundled up in anticipation of fellowship and wonderful food.

Pancakes, breakfast burritos, eggs, and cinnamon french toast was followed by a lively discussion from Psalm 37 lead by Eric.

Sunday night was our montly potluck called Re:Freshing.  Not only do we bring food, but we bring our testimonies and verses to share, followed by prayer for one another.

All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.
